The best thermal insulator is air so where it is structurally feasible the standard, full area, plate can be modified to reduce the contact area and build in an air gap. Examples of such variants are shown here. All connection designs must be checked and approved by a structural engineer.
Stainless steel has a significantly lower thermal conductivity than normal steel (around 16W/m·K as opposed to around 54W/m·K for normal steel) so using stainless steel bolts instead of normal steel bolts will reduce the amount of thermal transfer through the connection.
